Vermiculite

VERMICULITE - universal mineral

Applied in construction, agriculture, metallurgy, breeding, ...

It is suitable for building non-combustible, fire-proof and insulation boards, where fire resistance and high temperatures are required.

Vermiculite - (Mg,Fe,Al)3(Al,Si)4O10(OH)2·4(H2O)

Vermiculite - (Mg,Fe,Al)3(Al,Si)4O10(OH)2·4(H2O)

Vermiculite is very universal mineral. It is clean, with no fragrance, odorless and mold-resistant. It has a remarkable ability to expand many times during heating. This property is known as exfoliation (peeling, flaking).

The use of vermiculite is very broad. It can be used in many applications, most of which require exfoliated vermiculite. Once the vermiculite has undergone exfoliation, it is sterile because of the high temperature during production.

Unlike similar minerals, vermiculite does not contain asbestos or fibrous carcinogenic particles.

What is exfoliation?

What is exfoliation?

The basic component of vermiculite is inter-layer water. When the vermiculite particle is rapidly heated, the interlayer crystalline water is converted into vapor. The pressure of this water causes that the layers begin to separate from each other, and the vermiculite scale creates particles that are twenty to thirty times more voluminous than the original.

Particles are carefully divided into five classes according to the size range:

  • Micron (0-1 mm)
  • Superfine (0-2 mm)
  • Fine (0-3 mm)
  • Medium (0-5 mm)
  • Large (0-8mm)

Vermiculite in industry

Expanded vermiculite is widely used as high temperature insulation in the production of metallurgy, foundry, glassworks. It is used as a bulk insulation and admixture for concrete and mortar in the building industry and as a sorbent in the chemical industry.
Vermiculite in garden

Vermiculite in garden

Vermiculite is a 100% natural mineral additive suitable for substrates of indoor and outdoor plants. It fulfills the function of the water reservoir (or fertilizer), which is gradually released into the soil. It can suck up an extreme amount of water, thus reducing the likelihood of rot and mold. The varied granularity of vermiculite allows access to air to the roots.

Common used for:

  • Seed germination of plants (without addition of soil or garden substrate)
  • Cultivation of plants without soil, called hydroponics
  • Storing fruits, vegetables, onions and tubers (maintains ideal moisture, reduces the likelihood of rot)

Vermiculite does not contain chemicals, is naturally sterile, odor-neutral, perfectly absorbs moisture and is an excellent thermal insulator. For these unique features, it is popular among pet breeders.

Vermiculite can be used In breeding as:

    • Substrate for incubation of eggs
    • Teraristic substrate for cold-blooded animals
    • Bedding - residential and outdoor use
    • Thermally insulating materiál.

    Vermiculite boards

    Vermiculite boards

In the construction industry, vermiculite has a wide use in the form of non-combustible, fire-proof and insulation boards. These boards are harmless to health, highly durable, strong and mechanically stable. They can be machined with conventional woodworking tools and only minimal dust is produced during their processing.

    • Production of fire-resistant and insulation products for construction purposes and protection of building structures (see Grenamat A, AL, B, C)
    • Production of insulating materials for fireplaces, stoves, boilers, chimneys and other heat sources (see Grenamat AS)
    • Use as high temperature insulation for iron and non-ferrous foundries, glass foundries and heat treatment furnaces (see Grenamat HTI)
    • Construction - an admixture for lightweight and insulation concrete, admixture for special plastering, admixture for low density floor and roof paints, loose insulation for building construction cavities
    • Automotive industry - manufacture of automotive friction lining
    • Metallurgy - insulation of metallurgical and foundry liquid alloy during transport and handling
    • Agriculture - agglomeration of agricultural land (lightening and increase of hygroscopicity), carrier medium for fertilizers and biopesticide agents
    • Gardening - admixture for garden moisture retention substrates, growth medium for seed germination and cultivation, hydroponics support
    • Breeding - bedding for domestic animals and reptiles (including incubation beds for hatching reptiles), drug carrier medium in feed mixtures
